About Us
Anthony John Tesoro was born in San Salvatore Telesino in the Province of Benevento, near Naples, in Italy. At the age of 9, he was enrolled in a tailors apprentice school where he learned the trade of tailoring.
In 1954, at the age of 15, he immigrated with his father John to America “for a better life”. They reunited with his mother Madeline and his sister who had come to the United States a year earlier. Upon arriving in New York, the family settled in the town of Jordan, and later moved to Auburn where Tony's brother was born.
In 1960, following school, Tony worked at several men's clothing stores in Auburn and in 1965 established a tailor shop in the basement of the duplex home on Wall Street. He worked days establishing his name to be synonymous with fine tailoring and friendly service, while working the night shift for eight years at the General Electric Company, saving money to open a more professional and centrally located tailor shop
In 1971, Tony's dream became a reality as he moved out of the family basement to 284 West Genesee Street in Auburn where he opened Tesoro's Men's Shop to support a loyal base of clients that were dedicated to him for all their tailoring and alterations.
Over the next two years, Tony expanded his business, taking over an adjoining store and adding a retail men's shop to his thriving tailoring and alterations business under the new name of Tesoro's Apparel. At that time the store specialized in men's apparel – from underwear to coats, professional attire to casual business and play, as well as men’s and women’s professional alterations and fine tailoring.
